Snow Clearance

In my corner of the South East we had 4″ or so of snow last night. As I live in a cul-de-sac there is not a snowballs chance in Hell that the local council will even try to grit or clear the roads and/or footpaths.

Therefore this year I invested in some rock salt, a snow shovel and went out to do the right thing.

Before:

Cul-de-sac before clearance

One blogger, with one shovel and 100 minutes of work later:

Cul-de-sac after clearance

The only downside was the number of my neighbours who walked past with even making a token attempt to acknowledge my efforts.

To hell with ‘em! You feel better for doing it, and that counts… ;)

Two shovels, 120 minutes of work, and I’ve done 90% of our driveway. ;-)

Exactly the same here, with the sole exception of a really decent old fellow who lives two doors away. He knocked my door several hours later with a bottle of red as a thank you. I invited him in to drink it along with some Canadian club so apologies for typos!

Well done that girl! Mind you, am surprised some smart alec has queried why the roads haven’t been cleared…….. (only joking!)

Trundling along to get the morning paper this morning, I noticed a significantly larger percentage of people than last time had cleared their driveway and pavement. Perhaps people are starting to realise government services (especially local services) can’t be relied on?

Got up early on Sunday morning to clear the snow from my area, 1/2 hour to grit and tidy up.
Neighbors did their usual routine of curtain twitching and staring.
Come to think of it, I am the only person I know in my block of 8 flats who:
Has a fulltime job, Pays Rent, does not receive benefits.
In 5 years of living in the same house I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen the neighbors step outside, so I guess they don’t have any need to move their cars in the snow.

I have to admit , I was pretty impressed with Southend Council’s effort to shift the snow in town at least ( and clear paths through the pavement-wilderness that is the new Victoria Circus junction), despite the sight on Monday morning of one workman chipping frozen snow off the steps by River Island while two others stood near the works van parked in the High St and watched him…

And I see the ‘Mail’ is this morning asking its readers if they think it should be a legal requirement to clean your own patch of pavement, as it is in other countries!

Not being a fan of legislation, I don’t think it should be a legal requirement. It’d be just another unenforceable law on the Statute Book – and we aren’t exactly short of them.

Snow clearance should be the civic responsibility of all householders with not having cleared it away a mark of shame. The problem there however is that these days many people have no shame…
